The age-old debate goes on, Bow-wow or Meow ? are dogs better than cats or vice-versa. And how do you decide which animal is the one for you?. Well, there are a few things to keep in mind while choosing the right pet. Here are a few ideas to help you decide.
Lifestyle The first and foremost to consider is your lifestyle, which pet is the most practical to suit your lifestyle or way of life. Dogs are pack animals, like wolves, they love companionship, are loyal, and sociable. They need exercise and walks on a regular basis to keep them healthy and fit.
But, hate to be left alone, especially for long periods of time. They are needier than cats and can have separation anxiety, especially if their 'pawrents' work long hours.
Cats, on the other hand, are laid back and amble about on their own, they are more independent than dogs and can take care of themselves quite well on their own. They don't require walks or regular exercise and are quite happy keeping themselves stimulated or entertained with something as simple as a rolling ball. Cats are suited to people with a more laid-back lifestyle and who are not very active. Dogs are a better companion for people who lead an active lifestyle.
The cost of owning a pet is an ongoing financial commitment, make sure they suit your pocket and lifestyle before bringing one into your family. Dogs are generally more expensive to own and maintain than a cat. From adoption expenses ( Nil if getting one from a shelter), Vaccination and Vet Expenses, Pet insurance and not to mention Food and Treats, the costs add up pretty fast. As per Moneysmart.gov.au after your first year of owning a pet, you can expect to pay $1,627 each year for a dog and $962 each year for a cat.
Space and Accommodation Needless to say cats do not require a very large space to laze or be active in, apartments are well suited to their needs and lifestyle. As for dogs, they usually require more space to lead an active and healthy lifestyle. Cats can be easily trained to use the litter box, dogs need to be let out of the house/apartment every time nature calls (this could be many times in a day). Some dog breeds can shed a lot of their fur, you need to groom them regularly, especially if they are kept indoors.
Research the temperament and breed of a pet before you make your choice. Dogs are more vocal than cats and will make themselves heard when they are not happy about something, while cats quietly purr and walk away, if not agitated. Dogs usually have an average lifespan of 8-10 years, while cats are known to live longer, an average of 13-15 years. Some dog breeds are known to be better suited for families with young children than some other breeds, which are bred mainly to be on the farm or for hunting.
Pets are known to be great stress relievers, people who own pets are less stressed on average and are generally happier. Owning a pet is a big responsibility, they require love and attention and will in turn fill your life with unconditional love and affection.
In my opinion Pets are the Best , whether it is a Cat or a Dog.
